Indian-descended Nila Vikhe Patil elected to Sweden's Riksdag from Stockholm

Nila Vikhe Patil, daughter of educationist Ashok Vikhe Patil and great-granddaughter of cooperative sugar pioneer Vithalrao Vikhe Patil, won a parliamentary seat for Stockholm City in Sweden’s 349-member Riksdag. A longtime Green Party activist, she previously served on the Stockholm City Council and advised the Swedish Prime Minister’s Office on finance, taxes and housing under Stefan Lofven. Patil holds a bachelor’s degree and an MBA from the Gothenburg School of Business, plus an MBA stint at the University of Complutense in Madrid, and has worked for PwC since 2020, becoming a licensed public accountant in April 2025.

In her first remarks she pledged to represent non-voters, champion children’s futures, and push for a clean, disaster-resilient planet. The election gave the left-leaning opposition a slim majority, with the Green Party focusing on environmental and renewable-energy policies. Patil expressed deep affection for India and a desire to honor her late grandfather, former Union minister Balasaheb Vikhe Patil.
