Indian duo Jolly and Gopichand earn spot on World Championships podium after quarterfinal upset
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated China’s pair in the World Championships women’s doubles quarterfinals, securing at least a bronze medal.
In the women’s doubles quarterfinals of the World Championships, India’s Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand overcame China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in a three-game match, 16-21, 21-15, 21-13. The comeback secured their place in the semifinals and assures them of at least a bronze medal. This achievement ends a 15-year drought for Indian women’s doubles, the previous medal having been won by Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa in 2011.
The pair, who have previously reached the All England Open semifinals and earned Commonwealth Games bronze, returned from a serious ankle injury suffered by Jolly earlier this year. Their recent victories at the Indonesia Open, US Open and Philippine International Challenge signaled a strong return to form.
Why it matters
The win puts India back on the world badminton podium in women's doubles after a long gap.
