Indian Railways adds low-cost optional insurance for ticket buyers starting Oct. 27

From October 27, Indian Railways will let passengers buying reserved tickets at PRS counters purchase optional travel insurance for a premium of 45 paise, covering up to ₹10 lakh for death or permanent disability.

The railways are expanding its Optional Travel Insurance Scheme to include bookings made at Passenger Reservation System counters. Travelers can add coverage by paying just 45 paise per person, which provides a benefit of up to ₹10 lakh if a railway accident results in death or total permanent disability. The move follows directives from the Supreme Court. The scheme aims to offer affordable protection for rail users across the network.
