Indian stock exchanges close on Tuesday for Dussehra holiday

The BSE and NSE halted trading on Tuesday, October 20, in observance of Dussehra, with markets set to reopen on Wednesday.

India's primary stock markets, the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange, did not conduct any trading on Tuesday, October 20, due to the Dussehra festival. Every segment—equities, derivatives and sovereign loan bonds—remained closed, and trading is slated to resume on Wednesday, October 21. In the commodity sector, the Multi Commodity Exchange will skip the morning session but will open for trading after 5 PM.

This holiday is the second in October, the first being on October 2 for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti, according to the NSE calendar. Additional market closures are planned for Diwali-Balipratipada on November 10, Prakash Gurpurb on November 24, and Christmas on December 25. The previous trading day saw the Sensex and Nifty 50 fall more than one percent amid weak global cues and pressure on private-bank and IT stocks.

Why it matters

Investors need to know the market closure dates to plan trades and manage portfolio risk.
