Indian truck driver arrested in Utah for fatal California crash

Utah police apprehended Chamkaur Singh, an undocumented immigrant from India, after stopping his semi-truck for speeding on September 1. During the arrest, officers identified Singh as a fugitive wanted for vehicular manslaughter stemming from a March crash in Ontario, California, where his truck struck multiple vehicles, killing two American passengers and injuring others. Singh entered the U.S. illegally in December 2020, crossed the border in Arizona in August 2021, and later received a commercial driver’s license in California despite three prior driving convictions.
He is now held in the Grand County Jail, with Immigration and Customs Enforcement placing a detainer on his custody. The incident has prompted political criticism of sanctuary policies and calls for stricter licensing oversight.
