Indiana Senator Ron Alting resigns amid Walmart shoplifting allegations and health concerns

State Sen. Ron Alting announced his resignation after being accused of shoplifting at multiple Walmart locations and citing cognitive issues.

Indiana Republican State Senator Ron Alting declared his intent to resign after accusations that he pocketed merchandise from Walmart stores in Lafayette, Monticello, and Naples, Florida. In a Facebook post, Alting explained that recent medical examinations have revealed concerning shifts in his judgment, behavior, and cognitive function, prompting tests by neurologists, geriatric specialists, and mental-health professionals.

While no criminal charges have been filed, Elkhart County prosecutors have been tasked with probing the theft reports. Alting’s resignation will take effect if he wins re-election, after which the state’s vacancy process will allow the Indiana Republican Party to appoint a successor. He expressed confidence that the process will yield a strong leader for Senate District 22. The senator also noted his long tenure and gratitude to constituents, and his campaign funds remain available for future political use under state law.
