Indie Thriller “It Ends” Defies Odds to Secure Wide Theatrical Release

Writer-director Alexander Ullom’s low-budget film “It Ends” moved from a modest SXSW debut to a nationwide theatrical rollout after a stint on Letterboxd’s new video platform.

Alexander Ullom’s debut feature “It Ends” tracks four friends—Day, James, Tyler and Fisher—who become stranded on a never-ending two-lane road, besieged by frantic strangers from the woods. The film’s concise 89-minute runtime blends thriller pacing with commentary on digital disaffection and the transition to adulthood. Though it received modest praise at its South by Southwest debut in March 2025, the indie struggled to secure distribution throughout the remainder of the year.

In December, Letterboxd added the movie to its newly created Video Store, offering a limited-time rental that generated enthusiastic viewer response. Within a week, NEON purchased the theatrical rights, and the film is now playing in cinemas nationwide, marking a rapid ascent from festival circuit to mainstream screens. Ullom’s background includes a handful of YouTube sketches and a small subscriber investment, but he has not posted on the platform for over five years, giving the project a fresh, un-hyped profile. Critics note the movie’s blend of horror, humor, and social observation, positioning it as a standout among recent Gen-Z-focused releases.

Why it matters
