Indigenous rangers help map Groote Eylandt reef after tech missed 2024 bleaching

In 2024, Anindilyakwa Land and Sea Rangers detected coral bleaching along the Groote Eylandt coastline and reported their concerns to University of Technology Sydney scientists. The joint effort produced the inaugural detailed map of the reef, creating a reference point for ongoing health assessments. Emma Camp explained that unusually warm water triggered the bleaching, yet existing global models failed to predict it, underscoring the value of on-the-ground observations.

The team also noted that the reef had suffered damage from Cyclone Megan, a category-three storm that struck the area the same year. The survey recorded several coral specimens that appear to be previously undocumented, prompting further taxonomic work. Researchers emphasized that regular mapping and model refinement are essential to improve future forecasts. The initiative opens opportunities for traditional owners to name newly identified species in their language.
