Inditex debuts robot-run Lefties discount store in Liverpool, targeting Primark and Shein
Inditex opened its first UK Lefties shop in Liverpool, using robotic systems to lower staffing costs and challenge low-price rivals.
Inditex, the owner of Zara, inaugurated its first United Kingdom Lefties location in Liverpool’s Liverpool One centre, employing extensive automation such as whole-basket self-checkouts and conveyor-belt robots that sort hangers and garments. The shop carries men’s, women’s, children’s clothing, shoes and home goods, priced slightly above Primark but below Shein, with dresses averaging £18. It also introduces thermal wear, challenging Marks & Spencer and Uniqlo on basics.
Three stores are slated for this year—in Lakeside, Essex and the Metrocentre near Newcastle—with additional sites planned for next year. General director Xavier Ruz Riera highlighted Liverpool’s youthful, globally-connected demographic as the launch choice and said expansion will depend on early results. Analysts note the move intensifies competition in the value-fashion segment, pressuring rivals such as Primark, New Look, Matalan and online fast-fashion players.
