Indonesia and Australia pledge stronger cooperation to dismantle online scam networks

Australia's Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke announced renewed joint action with Indonesia to target cross-border online fraud after a ministerial meeting in South Jakarta.

During the Indonesia-Australia Ministerial Council on Law and Security in South Jakarta, Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke pledged that Australia will stand with Indonesia in cracking down on online scam operations. He underscored the urgency of the issue, noting the global rise in victims, and pointed to ongoing cooperation between the Australian Federal Police, Indonesia's National Police (Polri) and the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) to follow financial trails linked to fraud.

The meeting resulted in a joint communiqué, according to Coordinating Minister Dudung Abdurrachman, reaffirming a shared commitment to expand strategic partnership, maritime security, counter-terrorism, border protection and cybersecurity cooperation. Both sides emphasized the need for closer coordination and capacity-building to address increasingly sophisticated transnational crime. The ministers expressed hope that the dialogue would lead to more robust joint operations against online scams.
