Indonesia and Chile discuss joint green mining, battery and vaccine cooperation

Indonesia and Chile agreed to explore a partnership covering green mining, critical minerals, battery production and vaccine procurement, building on their existing trade pact.

At a meeting on the sidelines of the Indonesia-Latin America and Caribbean Business Mission, Indonesia offered Chile a broad MoU covering joint industrial ventures, a coalition of mineral-producing nations, eco-friendly mining methods and an ocean-based distribution plan. Chile’s foreign minister, Francisco Pérez Mackenna, responded positively and pledged swift action, while also expressing interest in sourcing vaccines from BioFarma.

Both governments intend to prioritize the Indonesia-Chile Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement for battery and vaccine projects, encouraging collaboration among Codelco, PT Freeport Indonesia, INALUM and Elecmetal. The proposal includes an “Indonesia-Chile Industrial Bridge” for mining waste management and the exploration of long-term contracts, with Petrobras and Pertamina discussed for oil-gas block auctions. Additionally, Indonesia invited officials from Puerto San Antonio to discuss port-construction contracts as current concessions near expiry in 2029.

Why it matters

The deal could deepen Indonesia-Chile trade, advance sustainable mining and expand vaccine and battery supply chains in both regions.
