Indonesia and China Form Working Group to Advance 3-Million-Home Initiative

Indonesia and China have set up a joint working group to explore construction-technology cooperation for President Prabowo Subianto’s 3 million homes program, with findings due by the end of September.

Indonesia is seeking Chinese partnership to accelerate President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship 3 million homes scheme. In a meeting in Jakarta, Public Housing and Settlements Minister Maruarar "Ara" Sirait and Chinese Ambassador Wang Lutong agreed to create a working group that includes BP Tapera members. The group will survey potential development sites and report its findings by the end of September, after first reviewing local land conditions and relevant rules.

The collaboration focuses on importing construction technology for high-rise buildings in crowded urban zones, with an emphasis on safety, efficiency and affordability. Beijing pledged to share expertise and promote technology exchanges, while Jakarta aims to involve micro, small and medium enterprises and prioritize local materials and labor. The initiative is framed as a mutually beneficial partnership that could boost both economies.

Why it matters

The partnership could speed up Indonesia's massive public-housing drive and create jobs for local firms and workers.
