Indonesia and China launch joint fleet of 33 fishing vessels in the Arafura Sea
Indonesia and China have begun operating a cooperative fleet of 33 fishing boats in the Arafura Sea, aiming to boost catches and modernise coastal fisheries.
In Tual City, the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries disclosed that Indonesia and China are jointly operating 33 fishing vessels under a Technical Cooperation Guidelines framework. The agreement, signed by the Indonesian minister and China's Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, targets higher productivity, fleet modernisation, and economic growth for coastal towns. The fleet should create jobs for around 669 people and generate an annual catch of about 9,500 metric tons, each vessel receiving a quota near 200 metric tons.
The project is projected to bring roughly Rp65 billion in non-tax state revenue and includes development of on-shore facilities, fish processing, data exchange, and worker welfare programs. Compliance with permits, catch reporting and traceability of fish origins is emphasized. The cooperation follows President Prabowo Subianto's 2024 visit to China and aligns with Indonesia's measured fishing policy.
