Indonesia and Senegal sign expanded trade and investment agreement
Indonesia and Senegal sealed a new pact in Jakarta that broadens cooperation in trade, investment, shipping, logistics and banking.
At a forum in Jakarta, Indonesia and Senegal concluded an enhanced commercial accord that expands on a previous bilateral framework. The deal covers investment, bilateral trade, shipping, logistics and banking, and includes provisions for legal safeguards and coordination with UNCCIAS on operational disputes. Mintardjo Halim emphasized the need for preferential trade agreements to overcome high duties and non-tariff barriers that hinder growth.
Alex Rudini Sulaiman encouraged Indonesian firms to set up manufacturing in Senegal to cut production costs, noting interest from companies such as PT Charoen Pokphand Indonesia Tbk. He also referenced PT Bakrie & Brothers Tbk's existing investments in Guinea and plans to move into mining. The parties view the pact as a stepping stone toward broader economic ties between Indonesia and West Africa.
Why it matters
The pact could boost Indonesian investment in West Africa and reduce trade barriers, fostering economic growth for both regions.
