Indonesia and US deepen cooperation on AI governance and child online safety
Indonesia and the United States agreed to expand digital cooperation on artificial intelligence and child protection, with Jakarta outlining a risk-based AI governance framework.
Indonesia’s Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid met with US Charge d’Affaires ad interim Joy Sakurai in Central Jakarta to broaden bilateral digital cooperation. The discussion centered on advancing artificial intelligence collaboration and establishing safeguards for children in digital spaces. Jakarta is preparing an AI governance framework that employs risk-based regulation, categorising AI applications as unacceptable, high or low risk and tailoring rules to each sector.
The government also plans an age-based access model, limiting high-risk platforms to users 16 and older and lower-risk services to those 13 and up, while urging tech firms to add child-friendly features. The United States welcomed these measures and pledged assistance via the AI Export Center in San Francisco, offering expertise to integrate AI within Indonesian government agencies. Both parties view the partnership as a way to foster innovation while protecting public safety online.
