Indonesia calls for urgent United Nations reform to boost multilateral cooperation

Foreign Minister Arrmanatha urged the UN to undergo swift reforms, saying multilateralism is essential and the organization must stay relevant for the 21st century.

During a speech in Jakarta, Foreign Minister Arrmanatha stressed that multilateralism is a necessity for Indonesia and the world, noting a decline in space for collective dialogue. He called for immediate United Nations reform to keep the body effective in addressing 21st-century challenges, insisting the UN Charter must stay the foundation of global relations. The minister clarified that reform is not about overhauling the system but about creating a UN that delivers tangible outcomes for its members.

He advocated for greater influence of developing countries, particularly from the Global South, in the organization’s operations, resource allocation, and responsiveness. Arrmanatha reaffirmed Indonesia's commitment to the UN, citing its constitutional duty to support a world order based on independence, peace, and social justice, and reiterated support for Palestinian self-determination.
