Indonesia deploys over two thousand health workers to combat haze-related illnesses

The Ministry of Health has sent 2,106 health workers and distributed millions of medical supplies to address respiratory problems caused by worsening forest fires in seven provinces.

Facing severe haze from forest and land fires across seven provinces and 63 districts, Indonesia's Ministry of Health activated a large-scale response. A total of 2,106 health workers were deployed, and the ministry reinforced referral pathways and disease-surveillance networks. Around three million masks, oxygen concentrators, medicines and personal protective equipment were distributed to sustain medical care.

Data from 37 air-quality stations indicated that several areas were classified as hazardous, very unhealthy or unhealthy. The health impact is evident in a cumulative count of 277,075 acute respiratory infection cases, with 62,400 affecting children aged zero to five. Officials also urged the public to use properly fitted N95 or KN95 respirators and called on local authorities to create smoke-safe spaces for vulnerable groups.

Why it matters

The deployment aims to protect millions from serious respiratory illness as hazardous haze spreads across Indonesia.
