Indonesia greenlights neighboring countries' aid to combat raging forest fires

Indonesia approved foreign assistance to fight widespread forest and land fires, with technical discussions now under way.

President Prabowo Subianto authorized assistance from neighbouring countries to tackle Indonesia’s extensive forest and land fires, and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is conducting technical discussions on implementation. Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir confirmed that offers have been received but did not name the donors or specify the aid. Malaysia has offered a Bombardier CL-415MP water-bombing plane, three helicopters and 52 staff, and Singapore’s Minister Grace Fu said her government is ready to help.

Roughly 60,000 personnel are operating in six priority provinces, supported by aerial water-bombing and weather-modification efforts. Indonesia continues to report fire data to the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Transboundary Haze Pollution Control, noting a recent drop in hotspots. Newly appointed BNPB chief Lieutenant General Kristomei Sianturi said he will assess both domestic resources and foreign assistance to strengthen the response.

Why it matters

Foreign aid could help curb the fires that cause hazardous haze across the region.
