Indonesia invites investors to develop 43 newly identified oil and gas fields
Indonesia announced that 43 oil and gas discoveries in explored basins are now open for investment, aiming to boost upstream production.
During the 2026 ASEAN Council on Petroleum meeting in Sanur, Bali, SKK Migas Deputy for Exploration, Development, and Working Area Management Rikky Rahmat Firdaus revealed that Indonesia is making 43 oil and gas discoveries in already explored basins available for private investment. These assets include under-developed discoveries and stranded field development plans, complementing broader invitations to invest in 20 producing basins and explore 65 frontier basins with limited activity.
Indonesia’s upstream potential is underscored by its 128 sedimentary basins, 2.3 billion barrels of proven oil reserves and 35 trillion cubic feet of natural gas across 168 contract areas. Deputy of Finance and Commercialization Desti Melanti added that attractive fiscal incentives and legal certainty are essential to convert these resources into production and meet national output targets. The government aims to match resources with suitable investment strategies to accelerate the transition from potential to actual output.
Why it matters
The initiative could attract foreign capital, increase Indonesia's energy output, and strengthen its role in the regional oil and gas market.
