Indonesia invites Tsinghua University to launch AI research in Bali SEZ

National Economic Council Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan asked Beijing's Tsinghua University to join AI projects at Bali's Kura Kura Special Economic Zone, aiming to start collaboration this year.

At the China-Southeast Asia Forum on Higher Education and Industry Cooperation 2026, National Economic Council Chairman Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan urged Tsinghua University of Beijing to take part in artificial intelligence research within the Kura Kura Bali Special Economic Zone. He highlighted plans to establish an AI research centre there and expressed a desire for the collaboration to begin within one outlet year. Luhut emphasized that the partnership would support Indonesia's transition to a Government Technology model aimed at boosting public-service efficiency and reducing corruption, a goal championed by President Prabowo Subianto.

He called for more than equipment, seeking researchers, scientific expertise, and an innovation ecosystem. The SEZ's strategic location is intended to link academia, industry, and regional partners, positioning Bali as a hub for talent development and technology in Southeast Asia.
