Indonesia launches coordinated firefighting and cloud-seeding campaign in Way Kambas
Indonesia's disaster agency led a joint operation, including cloud-seeding, to combat forest and land fires in Way Kambas National Park.
Lieutenant General Kristomei Sianturi, head of BNPB, visited the fire-fighting sites in Way Kambas National Park on October 25, confirming an integrated response involving BNPB, the regional disaster agency, the armed forces, police, BMKG, the fire department and the park authority. Ground teams were supported by aerial cloud-seeding using a Cessna Caravan, which released a total of 1,000 kg of sodium chloride to dampen fire spread.
The operation relied on real-time hotspot data, weather forecasts and reports from field personnel to prioritize hotspots. Authorities highlighted the importance of inter-agency coordination and modern technology in protecting the ecologically vital area. They also called on farmers, plantation owners and other stakeholders to use environmentally friendly clearing methods to prevent future outbreaks.
Why it matters
The coordinated effort aims to protect a key conservation area from destructive fires that threaten biodiversity and local livelihoods.
