Indonesia launches massive overhaul of health centers and hospitals for 2027-2029

Indonesia plans to renovate 8,001 community health centers, build 1,988 new ones and revitalize 441 regional hospitals from 2027 to 2029, Deputy Health Minister Benyamin Paulus Octavianus said.

Deputy Health Minister Benyamin Paulus Octavianus announced a national revitalisation programme that will see 8,001 existing puskesmas renovated, 1,988 new community health centers constructed and 441 Regional General Hospitals upgraded between 2027 and 2029. The plan shifts spending from hospital treatment toward primary-care prevention and includes deploying mobile X-ray units to all community centers. In Bali alone, 119 puskesmas will be refurbished, four severely damaged ones rebuilt, and seven large-population centers split to optimise coverage.

Octavianus warned that rapid facility upgrades must be accompanied by training more radiographers and specialist doctors. The West Denpasar Puskesmas UPTD III, transformed from a former flea market and waste dump, now provides 24-hour emergency obstetric and neonatal services and integrates with the civil registration agency to issue birth certificates. Denpasar Deputy Mayor Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa and Health Office Head Anak Agung Ayu Agung Candrawati highlighted the centre’s full integration with the National Health Insurance Program (BPJS Kesehatan) to ensure equitable care.

Why it matters

The programme aims to boost primary-care access and health outcomes for millions across Indonesia.
