Indonesia launches reimbursement scheme to encourage vasectomy uptake

During a media briefing in Jakarta, the Ministry of Family Planning's Director of Service Access Development, Fajar Firdawati, detailed a new financial support plan for vasectomy patients. Eligible men will receive between Rp300,000 and Rp450,000 to cover the procedure and the three-day recovery period when they cannot work, especially benefiting informal day-laborers. The assistance is framed as a reimbursement rather than a cash incentive, and applicants must be aged 30-35, have at least two children with the youngest between three and five years old, and obtain written consent from their spouses and families.

Current contraceptive use in Indonesia remains heavily skewed toward female methods, with male participation limited to condoms and a small number of vasectomies. Officials emphasized the need for public education to overcome cultural taboos surrounding the operation.
