Indonesia misses deadline to appoint panel for vetting election officials

The government has failed to announce the members of the committee that screens candidates for the KPU and Bawaslu, missing the legal deadline.

Indonesia’s election law requires the president to establish a committee at least six months before current commissioners’ terms end, making Oct. 12 the cut-off for naming a panel that will vet candidates for the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu). The deadline has now passed without any official announcement of the panel’s composition. Lawmaker Mardani Ali Sera of the Prosperous Justice Party asserted that President Prabowo Subianto signed a decree to create the committee, yet the administration has not verified this or revealed who will serve.

He emphasized that the panel must consist of people of high integrity and competence to ensure fair and independent election oversight. State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi and deputy Juri Ardiantoro did not respond to inquiries. The delay raises questions about compliance with the law and the transparency of the selection process.

Why it matters

A missing election-oversight panel could undermine confidence in Indonesia’s upcoming polls.
