Indonesia mourns veteran artist and politician Guruh Soekarnoputra, age 73
Guruh Soekarnoputra died at 73, and his family is currently discussing the timing of his burial, while PDI Perjuangan expressed deep sorrow.
Mohammad Guruh Irianto Soekarnoputra, the younger brother of PDI-P chair Megawati Soekarnoputri, passed away at 4:16 a.m. on Saturday in Jakarta’s MRCCC Siloam Hospitals Semanggi, aged 73. President Prabowo Subianto posted a pencil sketch of Guruh on his official Instagram story, offering his condolences. Guruh, the youngest child of Indonesia’s first president Sukarno and Fatmawati, had been in intensive care after a year of declining health, a fact first announced by PDI-P secretary general Hasto Kristiyanto.
His nephew Didi Mahardika had alerted Prabowo, who then asked that Guruh receive intensive medical attention due to his cultural and historical significance. A celebrated artist, choreographer, and senior politician, Guruh founded groups such as Swara Mahardhika, GSP Production, and the music ensemble Guruh Gipsy. He served in the Indonesian House of Representatives and joined the PDI-P in 1982. His body was laid to rest at a funeral home on Jalan Sriwijaya Raya in South Jakarta.
