Indonesia moves to phase-2 of EV battery and storage push with $618 bn roadmap

Indonesia's investment ministry announced a shift to phase two of its downstream strategy, focusing on electric-vehicle batteries and energy-storage systems.

Heldy Satrya Putera, deputy for strategic investment downstream, told officials that Indonesia is entering the second phase of its downstream agenda, which will prioritize electric-vehicle battery manufacturing, battery-energy-storage systems and other high-added-value products. The plan, part of a broader roadmap covering 28 key commodities, targets $618.1 bn in investments through 2040. Downstream spending in the first half of 2026 reached Rp300.1 trn (around $16.86 bn), representing 29.7% of total national investment and a 6.9% year-on-year rise, with FDI accounting for roughly 71% of that sum.

The ministry, together with Fastmarkets, will host the International Critical Minerals and Metals Summit in Bali from 27-30 September, bringing together government officials, investors and battery material producers. Sessions will focus on high-pressure acid leach nickel processing, precursor and cathode manufacturing, raw-material supply and technology transfer to keep Indonesian battery components competitive globally.

Why it matters

The move aims to position Indonesia as a major player in the global EV battery supply chain.
