Indonesia nears full food self-sufficiency as Prabowo administration marks two years
Indonesia reports self-sufficiency in eight staple foods and is targeting the last three, celebrating two years of President Prabowo’s rule.
At a ceremony in Jakarta, Amran announced that Indonesia has reached self-sufficiency in eight major food items, a milestone he linked to President Prabowo’s two-year tenure. The eight commodities include rice, corn, consumer sugar, broiler chicken, eggs, shallots, large red chilies and bird’s eye chilies. The Ministry of Agriculture is now focusing on garlic, soybeans and beef to complete self-reliance for all eleven staple foods.
Between 2024 and 2026, authorities prosecuted 102 individuals accused of undermining food security, and in September 2026 withdrew 25 fortified-rice brands owned by 11 companies for violating standards. The effort is backed by the National Police’s Food Task Force, which works with the ministry to curb illegal practices. Officials stressed that the progress reflects collective effort and will reduce Indonesia’s reliance on imports.
Why it matters
Achieving food self-sufficiency reduces import dependence and strengthens Indonesia’s economic and national security.
