Indonesia pledges continued support for Palestinian education at UNESCO meeting

Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to sustain education for Palestinian youth, urging stronger international cooperation for UNRWA programmes during the UNESCO Executive Board session in Paris.

During the sixth day of UNESCO's 225th Executive Board session in Paris, Indonesia's deputy permanent delegate, IGAK Satrya Wibawa, reiterated the country's dedication to preserving education for Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict. He urged the international community to bolster UNRWA's capacity, noting that about 745,000 Gaza students have been out of school for over two academic years and that thousands more in the West Bank face similar risks.

Indonesia praised UNESCO's assistance to UNRWA and stressed the importance of sustained, accountable financing. The government also launched a Rp22 billion master's scholarship for 200 Palestinian students and reported recent aid deliveries totalling US$22.55 million and 500 tons of supplies to Gaza. Wibawa called for curriculum development that respects Palestinian authority and for expanded emergency learning initiatives, such as the Gaza Virtual Campus Network, which has reached roughly 40,000 learners.

Why it matters
