Indonesia reports 56% influenza positivity, urges vigilance over medium-risk surge

In the 38th week of 2026, Indonesia’s Health Ministry recorded a 56 % influenza positivity rate, with 148 of 265 sentinel specimens testing positive, dominated by the H1N1pdm09 strain. Community health-center (puskesmas) surveillance placed overall activity in the medium category, while hospital data remained low. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin emphasized that the increase aligns with the typical seasonal trend and does not merit alarm, calling for enhanced surveillance and preparedness.

The ministry also clarified that the H3N2 subclade K dubbed “superflu” is being monitored, but detections this year are fewer than in 2025. Antiviral oseltamivir should be reserved for severe or high-risk patients to prevent resistance. Authorities urged the public to keep good hygiene, wear masks when ill, and seek medical care if symptoms worsen, especially vulnerable groups.
