Indonesia's environment ministry to connect regional waste-fuel producers with large industry buyers
The Environment Ministry announced it will act as a bridge between regional waste-to-fuel plants and national-scale industries to secure markets for green fuel.
In a statement confirmed on Sunday, Minister Hidayat explained that the Environment Ministry will facilitate connections between regional waste-processing facilities and large industrial consumers to guarantee a stable market for alternative fuels. After touring the Gema Santi On-Site Waste Processing Center in Klungkung District, Bali, he highlighted the dual benefit of reducing coal and natural-gas use while helping industries meet net-zero targets.
Buyers have already approached the ministry seeking information on available waste-based fuels. To overcome logistical challenges, the ministry proposes aggregating waste from multiple districts to achieve economies of scale. Hidayat emphasized that the initiative could enhance companies' emission-reduction credentials and global competitiveness. Success in Klungkung is intended to serve as a national pilot for other regions.
Why it matters
Linking waste-derived fuel to major users could boost Indonesia's clean-energy transition and create new markets for regional waste processors.
