Indonesia's Finance Minister sees economy edging toward 6% growth this year
Finance Minister Purbaya said Indonesia is poised to return to near-6% growth in the third quarter, after quarterly gains above 5%.
During a media briefing in Jakarta marking one year in office, Finance Minister Purbaya projected that Indonesia could approach a 6% growth rate in the third quarter of the current year. He cited quarterly figures of 5.39% in the fourth quarter of last year, 5.61% in the first quarter of 2026 and 5.29% in the second quarter, noting a modest dip caused by global disruptions. Purbaya emphasized that restoring public confidence is crucial, referencing the self-fulfilling prophecy concept to explain how optimistic expectations can lift the economy.
He warned that a pessimistic outlook among consumers and investors might trigger a recession, but asserted that the private sector is already accelerating. Government measures remain in place to back growth, and if conditions persist, a near-term 6% expansion appears achievable.
