Indonesia sends Thai corruption suspect back to Thailand after joint anti-corruption operation
Indonesian immigration authorities deported a Thai national wanted in a corruption case after coordinated action with Thai anti-corruption agencies.
Novan Indriyanto, acting director of immigration supervision, confirmed that a Thai national was deported from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport after being handed over to Thailand. The individual, who arrived in Indonesia on 21 February 2026 with a KITAS, was flagged when he applied for a stay-permit extension on 25 September 2026, triggering a Subject of Interest alert. The KPK had received a formal assistance request from Thailand's National Anti-Corruption Commission on 16 September 2026, prompting immigration to add the suspect to its watchlist.
With his Thai passport revoked amid a bribery investigation, he violated Indonesia's 2011 Immigration Law, providing grounds for removal. The operation was coordinated through ASEAN-PAC, and the suspect was already listed on an Interpol Red Notice. Authorities highlighted the case as evidence of transnational cooperation to prevent Indonesia from becoming a safe haven for corruption suspects.
Why it matters
It shows how regional cooperation can thwart corruption suspects from evading justice across borders.
