Indonesia to Retrofit Ex‑Italian Garibaldi Carrier with Local and Foreign Shipyards

The former Italian aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi arrived at Tanjung Priok and will undergo a retrofit by PT Penataran Angkatan Laut in partnership with Italy’s Fincantieri, with Leonardo slated to supply equipment. Admiral Muhammad Ali inspected the vessel and said the upgrade will extend its service life by 15 to 20 years, involving overhaul of engines and core technologies to suit the navy’s operational doctrine.

The work aims to keep the ship in service for disaster‑relief and other missions, and the formal handover from Italy is scheduled for Sept. 24. The retrofit follows earlier plans for the carrier’s conversion and its participation in upcoming naval events.
