Indonesia urges concrete steps to safeguard Jerusalem’s holy sites

At a ministerial gathering held alongside the 81st UN General Assembly, Indonesia’s foreign minister Sugiono warned that the situation in Jerusalem is deteriorating due to persistent provocations and violations by Israeli forces and settlers at the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex. He appealed to the international community to reinforce backing for the Jordanian Waqf and the Hashemite Custodianship, which oversee the holy sites and oppose unilateral claims.

Sugiono reiterated Indonesia’s opposition to Israel’s illegal settlement expansion, citing UN Security Council Resolution 2334 and its threat to a viable two-state solution. He urged OIC and Arab League members to step up joint actions, including possible import restrictions on goods from illegal settlements. The minister also called for broader cooperation to hold violators accountable, support Gaza’s reconstruction, maintain Palestinian unity, and continue funding for UNRWA. The meeting follows a recent extraordinary OIC summit in Jeddah, reflecting a coordinated diplomatic push by Arab and Islamic nations to defend Jerusalem and Palestinian statehood.
