Indonesia urges faster global pact to safeguard traditional knowledge and culture
Indonesia, leading the Like-Minded Countries group, called for accelerated negotiations on an international treaty to protect traditional knowledge and cultural expressions.
Representing Indonesia and the Like-Minded Countries, Yasmon announced a push for swifter talks on an effective international framework to protect traditional knowledge and traditional cultural expressions. He noted that the LMCs, a coalition of developing WIPO members, support the 2024 WIPO treaty and seek accelerated implementation via technical assistance and capacity building. The group also favors a consensus-based negotiating approach to speed up an agreement.
Indonesia showcased its diplomatic engagement by delivering two statements at the 53rd session of WIPO's Intergovernmental Committee in Geneva on September 16. The ministry urged indigenous peoples and cultural practitioners to continue documenting and safeguarding their communal intellectual property, stressing its cultural and economic importance for community welfare.
