Indonesia urges next UN chief to rebuild confidence and amplify Global South voices

During the UN General Assembly in New York, Indonesia’s foreign minister Sugiono urged the future UN secretary-general to work on restoring trust in the United Nations and to strengthen its capacity to handle growing conflicts. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that the voices of developing nations are more prominently heard within the multilateral system. Sugiono voiced these expectations after a meeting with Rebeca Grynspan, who currently leads UNCTAD and is among the candidates for the top UN post.

The call for reform arrives as Antonio Guterres is set to conclude his nearly ten-year tenure at the end of the year, with the new leader slated to assume office in January. Sugiono stressed that a revitalized UN would be better positioned to fulfill its core functions in a turbulent global environment.
