INEOS hires advisers to sell Manchester United amid poor season
INEOS, which owns a minority stake in Manchester United, has engaged Alvarez & Marsal to market the club for sale after a winless start to the campaign.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS, which acquired a minority share of Manchester United in 2023, has appointed the consultancy Alvarez & Marsal to find a buyer for the football club. The sale memorandum emphasizes United’s potential to reach European competition, a feat achieved only once under INEOS control. The team currently languishes at the bottom of the Premier League after 11 games, prompting vocal fan protests that included chants demanding the owners sell the club.
Ratcliffe’s stake, purchased from the Glazer family, has not quelled long-standing anti-ownership demonstrations. In a recent behind-closed-doors friendly, United defeated FC Lausanne-Sport, another INEOS-owned side, 2-1 during the international break.
Why it matters
The possible sale of Manchester United could reshape the club’s future and affect a global sports brand.
