Infineon launches $1.4 billion semiconductor plant in Thailand
German chipmaker Infineon Technologies opened a new backend manufacturing facility near Bangkok, marking a major investment as Thailand expands its semiconductor sector.
Infineon Technologies inaugurated a backend semiconductor manufacturing site near Bangkok, with an initial outlay of more than €100 million and a total project valuation of $1.4 billion. The facility opens with 30,000 sq m of cleanroom area, expandable to 150,000 sq m, and will process chips into finished, tested products. COO Alexander Gorski described the investment as long-term and strategic, citing Thailand’s proximity to China and the potential to double the company's revenue using its cleanroom capacity.
The plant also provides dual-sourcing capability for customers if the Malaysian factory encounters issues. Thailand aims to draw $18 billion in semiconductor investments by 2030, training thousands of workers and researchers as part of its broader sector strategy.
Why it matters
The plant strengthens Thailand's semiconductor ecosystem and gives Infineon a strategic foothold in a fast-growing Asian market.
