Inmate at Koridallos prison dies by suicide, sparking inmate protest
Valentina Tsakiri, a young woman detained for petty theft, took her own life in the Koridallos women’s prison, prompting fellow inmates to protest.
Valentina Tsakiri, a Roma woman in her early twenties, was held in the Koridallos women’s prison for a minor theft charge. Suffering from psychological problems, she repeatedly sought emotional support and medical care, which she said were lacking. She ended her life by hanging herself in the prison bathroom.
Her death marked the second suicide among inmates within a short period. In response, the prisoners staged a sit-in, declined to re-enter their cells, and presented a list of demands to the administration, calling for permanent doctors, psychiatrists, psychologists, easier access to medication, and segregation of inmates into separate wings. A demonstration was also organized outside the prison that same afternoon.
