Inside CanJam 2026: Boutique Headphones That Push Audio Boundaries
At CanJam SoCal 2026 in Irvine, a range of boutique headphones—including the $7,500 Campfire Audio Chimera and tube-powered Écoute TH2—showcased unconventional designs and high-end sound.
CanJam SoCal 2026 took place at the Irvine Marriott, where a few thousand audio fans explored booths from both major and boutique manufacturers, including Sennheiser, Focal, HiFiMan, Astell&Kern and Noble Audio. The standout was Campfire Audio’s Chimera, a nine-driver in-ear monitor priced at $7,500, noted for its rich bass, airy treble and exceptionally clear mids that brought vocal performances to life. Dan Clark Audio’s Aeon Core planar-magnetic headphones, priced at $900, delivered a wide soundstage and tight percussion, while HiFiMan’s $1,449 Arya offered Wi-Fi streaming but was harder to evaluate in the noisy venue.
The Écoute TH2 headphones impressed with a built-in vacuum-tube preamp, dual-mono amplification and solid active noise cancellation, though their high-frequency boost was a bit aggressive. More budget-friendly offerings, such as Fosi Audio’s under-$150 wired in-ears, demonstrated that compelling sound can also be found at lower price points. Overall, the show highlighted the continued relevance of specialized audio expos for discovering innovative, character-rich headphones.
