Inside Gaza's sprawling underground tunnel network used by Hamas
A reporter entered a section of Gaza's extensive tunnel system, which stretches for hundreds of kilometres and supports Hamas operations.
In an exclusive visit, journalist Régine Delfour descended into Gaza's underground tunnels located beside the Nahal Oz kibbutz, near the frontier with Israel. These tunnels, originally dug for contraband, have been enlarged over decades and now span several hundred kilometres. Hamas uses them to transport rockets, ammunition and to host command facilities, making detection difficult.
Certain shafts extend to the Rafah border area with Egypt, linking the enclave to the outside. The reporter noted the cool interior and numerous side passages, estimating the total length at about 700 kilometres, comparable to three Paris metros. Israeli forces consider the tunnels a major strategic target.
