Inside the Democratic Party’s Consultant-Run Fundraising Machine

Evan Barker’s memoir reveals how Democratic operatives turned political campaigning into a professional fundraising industry, using identity politics to control dissent.

In "Nothing Left: Confessions of a Democratic Operative," Evan Barker details her journey from a teenage Obama intern in Kansas City to a fundraiser for progressive consulting firms such as Left Rising. She depicts the Democratic Party as a fundraising apparatus that monetizes idealism and disciplines dissenters through identity politics. Barker cites specific incidents where the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, EMILY’s List, and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee intervened to favor establishment candidates, undermining Bernie-aligned challengers like Kara Eastman and Sharice Davids.

While she acknowledges short-lived policy successes—including stimulus checks, an expanded child-tax credit, and the Build Back Better agenda—these were later rolled back, leading the party to adopt a race-class narrative that frames every economic demand in racial terms. The memoir also offers a taxonomy of candidate types and critiques figures such as Gavin Newsom and Jasmine Crockett. Disenchanted, Barker turned to the Red Scare podcast, interviewed Lara Trump, and ultimately cast her vote for Donald Trump as a symbolic retaliation against the Democratic machine.
