Inside the PLA: Why China’s Officer Corps Includes Artists, Engineers and Politicians
China’s People’s Liberation Army maintains a vast officer corps that spans combat commanders, political commissars, entertainers and technical specialists.
Within the world’s largest armed force, the PLA’s officer corps is unusually broad, encompassing combat commanders, political commissars and a wide array of technical and cultural positions. Political officers, inherited from the Soviet model, monitor loyalty, run political education and manage everyday soldier welfare. At the same time, civilians such as singers and film producers can receive officer ranks, as seen when Peng Liyuan was appointed head of the PLA Academy of Art and granted the rank of major general.
Comedian Huang Hong also received a similar rank after taking charge of the August First Film Studio. The professional-technical track includes engineers, physicians, judges and other specialists, many of whom have never commanded troops. Although reforms in 2017-2021 aimed to simplify the structure, the split between command, political and technical officers continues to define the sprawling officer corps.
