Inside the Rise of ‘Intellectual Super-Influencers’ Shaping the New Populist Right

Baron Public Affairs LLC released a citation-driven analysis of seven conservative think-tank outlets—American Affairs, American Compass, the Foundation for American Innovation, the Claremont Institute, the America First Policy Institute, the Center for Renewing America and the Heritage Foundation—to pinpoint the scholars most shaping the nationalist-populist agenda. Aaron Renn, a former Accenture partner known for his “negative world” thesis, emerged as the most frequently cited, followed by University of Virginia sociologist Brad Wilcox and former left-leaning populist Michael Lind.

Unlike earlier conservative intellectuals, these figures concentrate on demographic decline, trade competition with China and the nation’s “social health,” sidelining growth-oriented or foreign-policy concerns. Baron’s report also distinguishes two camps: a policy-focused trio of outlets that cite heterodox liberals, and a MAGA-driven quartet that avoids liberal voices entirely. This internal division may shape how the right balances pragmatic policy work with partisan zeal in the post-Trump era.
