Insolvency filings surge to highest level since the global financial crisis

Insolvency practitioner Keaton Pronk reports that 274 corporate insolvencies were recorded in August, putting the year on track for the most appointments since the global financial crisis.

According to insolvency specialist Keaton Pronk of McDonald Vague, August recorded 274 corporate insolvency appointments, bringing the year-to-date total to 2,099 and setting a trajectory for the highest number since the global financial crisis. Liquidations accounted for 88% of the August filings, with 53% classified as insolvent liquidations and 35% as court-ordered liquidations. Pronk warned that the pattern is likely to continue at least until 2027, driven in part by the Inland Revenue's effort to recover close to $10 billion in tax arrears.

Much of the outstanding debt originated during the Covid era, when companies were allowed to defer payments. The tax authority now demands repayment within two years, a burden many small businesses cannot meet. While no single industry dominates the picture, the North Island appears to be lagging behind other regions.
