Insolvency surge hits Romanian trade and construction firms in first eight months of 2026
Romania saw a rise in bankruptcies among retailers and builders during the first eight months of 2026, with Bucharest recording the highest number of cases.
According to one outlet Trade Register Office, insolvency filings among commercial enterprises and authorized individuals rose during the first eight months of 2026, particularly in wholesale and retail trade, construction and processing industries. Bucharest topped the city ranking with the largest tally of cases, while Bihor, Cluj, Ilfov and Timiș followed. At the opposite end, Covasna, Harghita and Botoșani reported the fewest filings.
In August 2026, 357 entities entered insolvency, with the capital registering the highest monthly count. The trade sector led with the most cases, followed by construction and manufacturing, each showing substantial year-on-year growth.
