Instagram counterfeit ring sentenced after £158,000 cash found in baby’s bedroom

A mother-of-four who sold fake luxury goods on Instagram was sentenced to over four years in prison, after police seized £158,000 hidden among baby clothes.

Megan Carney-Borrowman built a multi-million-pound counterfeit business on Instagram, promoting fake Chanel, Burberry and Versace products to thousands of followers. Financial investigations revealed eight business accounts and 18 personal accounts, some in her children’s names, receiving nearly £4.32 million between 2019 and 2023. Police raids in 2022 and 2023 uncovered £158,000 hidden among baby clothing, which the defendant alleged was her children’s life savings.

In Liverpool Crown Court she was sentenced to four years and three months for conspiracy to commit trademark offences, money-laundering, benefit fraud and related charges. Her husband Jordan Borrowman, mother Sandra Carney and associate Adam Yaffe each received suspended custodial terms or community orders with unpaid work, reflecting their roles in the scheme.
