Instagram users are using ChatGPT to turn modern photos into retro 1980s-looking images and sharing them via Stories and the “Add Yours” sticker.
A fresh Instagram craze involves users feeding their recent photos to ChatGPT and asking the model to re-imagine them as if taken in the 1980s. The prompts specify details such as hairstyles, garments, accessories, lighting, background and film texture, producing images that resemble authentic Bollywood studio portraits, family-album pictures, vintage magazine covers, Doordarshan-era TV portraits, or street scenes from late-1980s India. The AI-generated pictures feature hallmarks of the decade—warm lighting, bright colours, soft focus and subtle grain—without merely applying a filter. Users share the results on their feeds and Stories, often attaching the platform’s “Add Yours” sticker to invite others to join the retro makeover challenge.
