Intense clash erupts between Islamic State Sahel and Al Qaeda affiliate in northern Burkina Faso
Islamic State Sahel fighters and the Al Qaeda-linked GSIM engaged in a large-scale battle in northern Burkina Faso, with each side claiming heavy enemy losses.
A major armed engagement took place in the arid northern region of Burkina Faso between the Islamic State Sahel (EIS) and the Groupe de soutien de l’islam et des musulmans (GSIM), the regional Al Qaeda affiliate. Hundreds of fighters from both groups clashed near a village, resulting in intense fighting. The Islamic State side claimed to have neutralised a large number of GSIM fighters, captured around one hundred motorcycles and seized hundreds of weapons.
While GSIM has not released an official account, reports suggest it also inflicted significant casualties on the Islamic State forces. Analysts note that, should these figures be confirmed, the battle would surpass previous intra-jihadist confrontations in lethality, even exceeding the fiercest clashes recorded in Syria in 2014.
Why it matters
The fight signals escalating rivalry between two major jihadist networks, potentially reshaping security dynamics in the Sahel.
