Intense fighting erupts between Yemeni army and Houthi rebels in Taiz

Heavy clashes broke out in Taiz governorate as Yemeni government forces and Houthi fighters exchanged fire, with dozens of casualties reported.

Fierce fighting has been reported in Taiz governorate between Yemeni government forces and Houthi rebels, concentrating on the al-Waziyah district and the al-Dharifah intersection. Military sources say the government side inflicted roughly 30 fatalities and 60 injuries on Houthi fighters. The Yemeni army also launched air strikes on rebel positions around al-Dhikra Junction and the nearby al-Damna and al-Rahida locales.

In the coastal city of Mocha, troops carried out raids aimed at disrupting Houthi movements, reinforcements and supply roads. Additionally, a prolonged three-hour clash in Kahbub ended with the army pushing back the Houthi attack and forcing the insurgents to withdraw.

Why it matters

The clashes show the ongoing volatility of Yemen's civil war and its impact on civilian security in Taiz.
